Bismarck Drag Show Being Accused Of Marketing To Children
"Just a Brunch of Kings and Queens" drag shows have some parents voicing concern. This event is taking place on Saturday, June 18th from 10:30 am to 1 pm at the Ramada in Bismarck.
On the Just a Brunch of Kings and Queens Facebook Event Page it says this will take place at the Bismarck Ramada Heritage Ballroom. All ages are welcome but the page says, "best suited for 13+". Tickets are $25 dollars in advance, $30 dollars the week of, and $200 reserved for a table of 8.
The event will have some teen speakers, some mimosas (cash bar, drinks extra) brunch, and a family-friendly drag show.
The Facebook Event page also adds that after the show, you can meet the performers and get pictures taken. They will also have some speakers from the LGBTQ+ community share their resources and stories. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. Proceeds will go to teen LGB.
A post on Facebook that caught my attention portrays a completely different view on this event. The woman in the post claims the event is being explicitly marketed to children. She also pointed out that in the past a minor was a featured performer. She's calling on people to speak out and pray as children are being exposed to sexualized content and adults need to fight for them. She also went on to say, "Let me be clear, this has less to do with the LGBTQ+ community and more to do with exposing our children to things they shouldn't even know about until they are much older."
Here's that complete post.
Not all of the comments on the woman's Facebook page agreed with her observations. Some went on to disagree with her comments about the event marketing to young children as well.
I was curious, so I did a simple google search on "drag shows for Teens in North Dakota" and I did find similar events being held in Fargo. Minot has one for 16 plus and it appeared that Grand Forks only had drag shows for adults held in bars.
I spoke with Bismarck Mayor Steve Bakken and he's said he's heard from several parents concerned about the event.
This is a controversial subject for sure. We'll see how it all shakes out.
