Severe Weather: A Storms A Brewing For North Dakota Thursday

A Stormy Thursday

As I begin writing this article, the EAS system is going off across our stations, as we start your Thursday with a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for our counties south of the Bismarck-Mandan metro, including Sioux and Emmons. 60-mile-per-hour winds and quarter-sized hail will impact the communities of Strasburg, Fort Yates, Hazelton, and Linton. This Severe Thunderstorm Warning goes until 7:30 am this morning. This storm will not affect BisMan.

The Severe Weather Levels

Parts of North Dakota are in a Level 3 severe weather threat for today, which includes a good portion of south-central and southeast North Dakota, extending just south of the Capital City. Most of North Dakota is in a Level 2 severe weather threat. Here's the latest map from the Storm Prediction Center from the National Weather Service.

Impacts Expected

Once again, everything is on the table. Damaging winds up to 80 miles per hour, large hail up to 2 inches in diameter, and a tornado or two are all possible. Heavy rain is also possible if you get underneath the right clouds.

Timing of the Severe Weather

The storms this morning are just the appetizer for today's main event. Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and continue this evening as they move from west to east across central North Dakota into southeastern North Dakota.
