A Blizzard Warning Has Been Issued For Parts Of North Dakota
UPDATE: The following counties have been added to the Blizzard Warning in our listening area: Including Bismarck Mandan.
Burleigh, Mercer, McLean, Oliver, Morton, Emmons, McIntosh, and Logan. Including the cities of Bismarck, Mandan, Flasher, Linton, Strasburg, Wishek, and Ashley.
The National Weather Service in Bismarck has just issued a Blizzard Warning for parts of southwest & south-central North Dakota from now until 5 am Mountain time or 6 am Central time Friday, December 23rd.
Ground Blizzard Conditions with winds up to 50 miles per hour causing whiteout conditions and very dangerous windchils.
This includes the counties of Stark, Slope, Hettinger, Grant, Bowman, Adams, and Sioux in North Dakota. Cities in the impacted area include Elgin, Carson, New Leipzig, Dickinson, Marmarth, Mott, Regent, Hettinger, Selfridge, and Solen.
This will mostly be a wind event. Recent snows, including the 20-plus inches most areas of southwest North Dakota, received last week, on top of a couple of inches received today will create blowing snow and very dangerous windchills.
Travel is going to be sketchy at best once the winds amp up in southwest North Dakota. Plan on slippery road conditions. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. This will impact your Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches and power outages are possible. The dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 5 minutes.
Travel should be restricted to emergencies only. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. Notify a friend or family member of your travel plans. If you get stranded stay in your vehicle. The latest road conditions can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.
Bismarck Mandan can expect similar conditions as we are very close to the affected area. A Winter Weather advisory has been issued for our area until 6 pm Friday, December 23rd. A Windchill Warning is also in effect for our entire listening area until 12 noon Christmas Eve, Saturday, December 24th.
