We've all noticed it. There are certain areas in Bismarck-Mandan that have an unpleasant smell.

For those who are not from the area, you might find this information useful. We've put together a list of the worst smelling spots in BisMan. Here are a couple areas where you should avoid any sort of "Lingering."

Obligatory Cranberries reference:

1. 40th Ave SE/Lakewood Area

This road in Mandan has a gnarly stench in the summertime. On any given summer day, if you're on the water or hanging out on a patio, you will surely notice the smell.

There is a waste treatment plant just a stone's throw from the street. The radius of the smell is pretty great; my heart goes out to those who reside in that general vicinity, because the air over that way is nothing short of rotten.

2. Memorial Highway, Mandan

There is an unfortunate waft that happens at the edge of Mandan. Speaking from experience, working everyday at the downwind radio station, I can attest to the air often being thick with a manure scent. Oh, and it's potent.

There are several other places that are affected by this waft, so I feel less attacked, personally.

If you're wondering why it often smells like poo, that's fair. A local livestock auction business sits not too far off in the distance.

I've heard people say that in the summer months they can smell it as far as Kiwanis Park in Bismarck.

3. E. Indiana & South Washington Lift Station

On occasion you will catch a whiff of something awful in this location. This isn't always the case, but it's often enough to make a mention.

4.  The Refinery/Old Red Trail

This one may be a little obvious, but hanging out near the refinery will be an assault to your senses. I'd avoid spending too much time near the refinery and/or on any nearby trails. It's no bueno.

5. Lincoln's Sewage Lagoon

This particular area north of the town of Lincoln is known for its unbearable stench. With a good northwest wind, many residents get blasted with some unpleasant fumes.

Lincoln's sewage lagoon has been said to be where creators of the movie "The Labyrinth" got the idea for the "Bog of Eternal Stench". -- Just kidding; I made that up.

Honorary Mention: Bismarck City Landfill. It didn't make the list because it was too obvious, but yes, she stanks.

That's All!

I'm sure there are other areas that deserve a little recognition; if that's the case send us a message through the app and let us know.

Thanks for reading!
